Unspoken Casualties is a documentary that examines both the cause and effects of mental health and suicide of all age groups in the United States and features real people who have suffered from depression while having thoughts of suicide.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one person dies every 40 seconds to suicide in the United States. In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health and suicide rates have spiked within the last year due to the entire nation shutting down and temporarily stopping normal everyday activities in order to prevent the spread of the lethal virus. The purpose of this project is to bring awareness to an age old issue. There are many stories about this tragedy that take place all over the world, yet the issue has not been addressed in depth. The conversation about suicide and it’s effects on people both young and old is long overdue and is especially important now more than ever when it comes to the pandemic. With this documentary being the driving force of the conversation, it is a way to help save lives and be an inspiration to others with the opportunity to help take care of each other when it comes to an uncomfortable topic such as this.

The Next Generation of Artist

Film producer Tyrone Dixon speaks with director Cameron Lee and writer Chariti-Johnson Hamilton about Unspoken Casualties.

HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT SOCIETY TODAY?

In an effort to promote suicide prevention, the entire team on this project was instructed to be open with each other and be available for one another in the event someone is feeling depressed or is showing signs of suicidal thoughts or tendencies. According to the director, everyone has a story to tell and sometimes as humans, we must be able to work together not only to bring the story to life but also to make everyone feel included as well as feel loved. In addition to the documentary project, an Unspoken Casualties Instagram and Twitter page was developed. This is to promote suicide prevention as well as creating an open and healthy online community for others that want to be able to connect with individuals that are experiencing depression or thoughts of suicide.
